A Foggy Encounter in a Green Land

"Iceland is green and Greenland is ice." So how did Iceland get it's name? Flóki Vilgerðarson was one of the first Norwegian Vikings to settle the country. After a good summer, but having poorly prepared for winter and desperate for the arrival of spring, he climbed a high mountain for a better view of the surroundings. In the distance, he saw a fjord full of ice. He called the fjord Isafjordur (Icefjord) and gave the country a new name 'Island' (Iceland). 

2014 Calendars

2014 desk calendars are ready and shipping! I have created a super special section in my Etsy shop just for them. The pages are 5x7" in size and the images are 5x5". The calendar pages are printed on the same photographic paper as my fine art prints. The only exception is the Eye Poetry calendar. It is printed on 15 pt heavy card stock for those who prefer more rigid pages.

Facades

Who can't help but fall in love with the cockeyed canal houses of Amsterdam? While strolling the streets, I saw numerous sofas being hoisted through windows, hanging from a hook on a wonderfully ornate gable. When I arrived with my enormous suitcase in tow, I laughed when I opened the front door to the apartment I was staying in and wondered how in the world I was going to get up the most narrow staircase I had ever encountered. Very carefully and sideways, as it turned out.
Interesting fact: the houses are narrow because property taxes were based on the width of the house, so people built them narrow, deep, and tall. 

Ordinary Silence

The beauty of the Icelandic landscape is punctuated by solitary buildings that quietly tuck themselves into their surroundings.

The Ring Road

Route 1, the Ring Road, circles Iceland. It is 832 miles (1,339 km) long and these are just some of the  incredible scenes I viewed through the windshield on my beautiful adventure.

Everything is Illuminated

Amsterdam works it's real magic at night after the sun has set and the lights come on.
