A Foggy Encounter in a Green Land

"Iceland is green and Greenland is ice." So how did Iceland get it's name? Flóki Vilgerðarson was one of the first Norwegian Vikings to settle the country. After a good summer, but having poorly prepared for winter and desperate for the arrival of spring, he climbed a high mountain for a better view of the surroundings. In the distance, he saw a fjord full of ice. He called the fjord Isafjordur (Icefjord) and gave the country a new name 'Island' (Iceland).

Midnight Sun

The longest part of the trip around Iceland was from Snaefellsnes in the northwest to Lake Myvatn in the northeast. This trip normally takes about 6 hours by car but took us about 16 hours because there was just so much jaw-dropping beauty to stop and photograph along the way. We arrived at our destination at about 1:30 AM. The sun never set completely, and for the last two hours of the trip we were treated to spectacular colors and landscapes such as these.

Fog Advisory

While in New Orleans a couple of weeks ago, the weather was unseasonably warm and I felt as though I had stepped into summer for a few days. As someone who lives in Montreal, this was a great, though brief, relief from frigid temperatures and mounds of snow. So, I wasn't expecting fog. On this particular morning  I was planning on sleeping in to recover from a stupidly early morning flight the previous day. For some reason, I couldn't (internal photographer's fog detector?), so I grabbed my camera bag and was treated to this enchanting vision.

Transitions

For the past few days, the approach of winter has become more palpable. Gloves and chunky scarves are needed when going out. Snowflakes float through the air, giving a preview of the blizzards to come. Sometimes a wind passes right through you that elicits a shiver from deep within. I both dread winter (as they are so long and can be quite severe where I live) and look forward to it, as it can be so very beautiful when all is covered in white.

P.S. If you didn't see my announcement on Facebook, I'm having a 25% off sale on iPhone 4 cases until November 13. You can find them here. I hope to have iPhone 5 cases in my shop soon.

London Fog

I'm back from an absolutely fabulous week in London. Here's just a little taste from some of my favorite spots: Notting Hill, Kengsington Gardens, and Richmond Park. I was amazed by how much nature photography one could do in and around London. What amazing parks this city has. Much more to come!

My Life in the Bush of Ghosts

The fog that morning was so thick and lasted so long. All that remained were ghostly impressions of the trees.
