Rooftop Soliloquy

Before my trip, I read the book Rooftops of Paris. It contains utterly beautiful watercolor paintings by Fabrice Moireau depicting this "levitated, almost unreal world". To capture his views, he would slip into apartment buildings, pretending to live there, and painted while perched precariously on high. I wasn't quite as bold as Fabrice, but was determined to capture this landscape of form, pattern, and rhythm. There is nothing like the feeling of stepping out onto a rooftop to suddenly have Paris there in front of you, in all its magic, at an unfamiliar altitude.

  1. Oh - I love these. Somehow roof tops in Paris are particularly beautiful - all that white and grey. For a while I lived in one of those attic studios on the top floor like those in some of the photos here, with a tiny little balcony. Ah - takes me right back :)

  2. I'm usually a silent admirer but this is so lovely; just what I needed for a Tuesday stuck in the doldrums.

  17. These roofs are gorgeous. I admire their simplicity and striking appeal. I totally get why Fabrice Moireau had to sneak out and pretend to be some apartment’s owner just to look at these stunning views. The houses and the roofs have something very catchy, and I, for one would also do anything just to look at their beauty and have something to remember.
